Everything you need to know about training at Apex Jiu Jitsu & MMA — from your first class to membership details.

Program Basics
We start as young as 3 years old with our Wolf Pups BJJ program — a playful introduction to grappling built around games, guided movement, and listening skills. From there, we have age-grouped classes for Kids (7–13), Teens (14–17), and Adults (18+). Every age group gets its own curriculum, its own coaches, and its own pace.
Not even close. Most of our adult members started with zero martial arts experience — some in their 20s, some in their 50s. Our coaches are experts at working with beginners of every age and fitness level. You'll learn proper technique from day one, at your own pace, with no pressure to do anything you're not ready for.
Yes — always. We run four distinct age groups: Wolf Pups (3–6), Kids (7–13), Teens (14–17), and Adults (18+). Each has its own schedule, its own class structure, and its own approach. A 5-year-old and a 15-year-old are never in the same class.
We offer six disciplines under one roof:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) — Ground fighting, leverage, and submissions. Gi and No-Gi.
Muay Thai — The art of eight limbs: punches, kicks, elbows, and knees.
Kickboxing — Stand-up striking with a focus on combinations, power, and cardio.
Boxing — Footwork, head movement, and crisp hands.
MMA — The complete system — combining striking and grappling.
Wrestling — Takedowns, mat control, scrambles, and competition prep.

Each art builds different skills. Many of our members cross-train in two or three.
For beginners, we recommend 2–3 classes per week. That gives your body time to adapt while building consistent skills. Many of our committed members train 4–6 days a week, but the key is consistency — three classes a week beats one intense session any day.
Most classes are 60 minutes. Wolf Pups sessions are 30 minutes — just right for our youngest students. Some disciplines run longer than 60 minutes depending on the art and the level.

Every class follows a structure: warm-up, technique instruction, drilling with a partner, and live practice or sparring (optional for beginners). You'll never just be thrown in and told to figure it out.
Yes. We run Adult BJJ Fundamentals classes specifically designed for newer students. These focus on core techniques, proper body mechanics, and building the confidence to join regular classes. Your free trial is also designed as a low-pressure introduction — show up, learn something real, and see how it feels.
That's one of the best things about Apex. We schedule classes so families can train simultaneously — your kids in Kids BJJ while you're in Adult Kickboxing down the mat. Many families train here together, and nobody has to compromise.
Safety, Instructors & Environment
Safety is non-negotiable. All classes are supervised by experienced coaches who control the pace, the intensity, and the pairings. Kids are taught proper technique before any contact, and sparring is always optional and closely monitored. Our mats are professional-grade, and we enforce strict rules about controlled behavior.
Sparring is always optional, especially for beginners and kids. When students are ready, our coaches pair them with experienced training partners who know how to work safely with newer students. You'll never be thrown into a situation you're not ready for — our coaches will let you know when the time is right.
Our academy was co-founded by Coach Jamil Hill-Taylor and Coach John Brattelli — two of the most accomplished grapplers in the sport. Coach Jamil is an IBJJF World Champion and ADCC competitor with over 20 years of elite competition and coaching experience. Coach John is a 2015 No-Gi World Champion, ranked #1 globally by IBJJF, with 25+ years of boxing experience on top of his grappling credentials. He's also the parent and coach of three world champions — so he doesn't just know how to train kids, he's raised champions from the ground up.

Leading our MMA program is Coach Dalash, a professional MMA fighter with 20+ years in combat sambo, wrestling, and mixed martial arts. And heading our wrestling program is Coach Ray Pate, a former Army Special Forces Green Beret and three-time Bronze Star recipient who has served as a Virginia National Team wrestling coach three years running and has coached a Beast of the East champion, VHSL state champions, and the winningest wrestler in Virginia history.

This isn't a one-coach gym. Every discipline has a dedicated head instructor with real-world credentials — competitors, champions, and professional coaches who know how to teach every level.
Yes. All of our coaches who work with youth programs are background-checked. They're not just martial artists — they're experienced with kids and teens, and they understand how to create a structured, safe, and encouraging environment for young students. Our co-founder Coach John is himself the parent and coach of three world champions, so youth development isn't a side project here — it's in our DNA.
Every class starts with a structured warm-up that targets the muscles and movements you'll use in training. Our coaches emphasize proper body mechanics from the very first class — how to fall safely, how to move efficiently, and how to protect yourself and your training partners. Technique before intensity, always.
Absolutely. We have a dedicated parent viewing area where you can watch your child's entire class. You'll see exactly what they're learning, how the coaches interact with them, and how they're progressing. Many parents tell us it's the highlight of their evening.
We have zero tolerance for aggressive or disrespectful behavior — from kids or adults. Our coaches address it immediately and directly. That said, the culture here self-corrects. Martial arts teaches respect through practice: you learn quickly that your training partner's safety is your responsibility. Most kids who come in as "the rough one" become the most respectful students on the mat within weeks.
Our mats are cleaned and sanitized daily. We expect all students to train with clean gear, trimmed nails, and proper hygiene — it's a sign of respect for your training partners. If you're sick, stay home and recover. We'd rather you miss a class than risk spreading anything.
Benefits, Goals & Expectations
Martial arts builds confidence the way nothing else can — through earned competence. When a child learns to escape a hold, land a combination, or earn a stripe on their belt, that confidence is real. It's not participation-trophy confidence. Discipline comes naturally: showing up consistently, following instructions, respecting coaches and partners, and pushing through difficulty.
Calmer and more controlled — every time. Martial arts gives kids a structured outlet for their energy and teaches them that real strength is about restraint. Kids who train learn when not to fight. They develop emotional regulation, impulse control, and the self-assurance that comes from knowing they can handle themselves if they ever need to.
Many parents come to us specifically for this reason — and they see results. The structure of martial arts (listening to a coach, following multi-step instructions, training with a partner) directly exercises the same focus and self-regulation skills that transfer to the classroom and home. We hear from parents regularly that their child's teachers notice the difference.
Extremely. BJJ, in particular, is considered one of the most practical self-defense systems in the world because it teaches you to control a larger, stronger opponent without striking. Our striking programs teach awareness, distance management, and how to defend yourself on your feet. But real self-defense starts with confidence — and confident people rarely need to use it.
Most students (and parents) notice changes within the first 4–6 weeks: better coordination, improved focus, and increased confidence. Technique development is gradual — you'll feel sharper every month. By the 3–6 month mark, the transformation is hard to miss. Consistency is everything.
Progress isn't just about athleticism — it's about consistency, effort, and character. Our coaches pay attention to the quiet wins: the shy kid who starts making eye contact, the uncoordinated kid who nails a technique for the first time, the hesitant kid who finally asks to try sparring. We use belt stripes, verbal feedback, and regular check-ins to make sure every student knows they're progressing.
Month 1: Sore muscles, new vocabulary, and a growing comfort level on the mats. You'll learn foundational movements and start building habits.

Months 2–3: Technique starts clicking. You'll recognize positions, remember sequences, and feel less lost during live drills. Confidence grows.

Months 4–6: You'll look back at where you started and barely recognize yourself. Coordination, fitness, and technique will all be noticeably sharper. Most students are hooked by this point.
Schedule, Pricing & Logistics
We offer several membership tiers depending on how many classes you want to take and which programs you're interested in. The best way to get pricing is to book a free trial — after your class, we'll walk you through the options and find a plan that fits your budget and goals. No high-pressure sales, ever.
We believe in earning your membership every month. We're happy to walk you through the specifics after your free trial so you can make an informed decision with zero pressure. Our goal is to make it easy to start — and to make you never want to stop.
We keep things transparent. Your coach will walk you through exactly what's included in your membership and what (if anything) is separate. No surprise fees, no hidden costs.
We run 50+ classes per week across all age groups and disciplines. Check our class schedule for specific times — you can filter by age group (Wolf Pups, Kids, Teens, Adults) to find exactly what fits your family's routine.
We offer a completely free trial class — no payment info required, no strings attached. Pick the program you're interested in, choose a class time that works, arrive about 10 minutes early, and we'll take it from there. It's just a class.
Wear comfortable athletic clothing — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt or rash guard. No zippers, buttons, or pockets (they can catch and cause injury on the mats). If you're trying a Gi BJJ class, we'll lend you a Gi for your trial. Bring a water bottle and a towel. We have a pro shop on-site when you're ready to get your own gear.
We offer both. If you're focused on a specific art — say BJJ or Kickboxing — we have memberships tailored to that discipline. But if you want to cross-train across multiple arts, we also offer memberships that give you unlimited access to every program: BJJ, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA, and Wrestling. Most gyms make you pick one. We give you the option to do it all.
Yes! We offer family rates for households with multiple members training. Many families train together at Apex Jiu Jitsu & MMA — it's one of the best things about our community. Contact us for details on family pricing.
Culture & Fitting In
Yes, and you're not alone. A huge number of our members started exactly where you are. Martial arts is the workout — you don't need to get in shape before you start. Our coaches scale everything to your current level. You'll be amazed at how quickly your fitness improves when you're learning something you actually enjoy.
We get it — walking into a martial arts gym for the first time is intimidating. That's exactly why we've built our onboarding the way we have. You'll meet the coach before class, get a quick tour, and be paired with an experienced partner who knows how to work with new students. Our coaches remember what day one felt like. They'll make sure you feel welcome.
Patience. Our coaches have seen it all — the kid who hides behind a parent's leg, the adult who almost didn't walk through the door. We don't force participation; we encourage it. Most reluctant kids are fully engaged within 2–3 classes once they realize the environment is safe and the other kids are just like them. For adults, the free trial removes the pressure entirely — come once, no commitment.
Family-oriented at the core, with a lane for competitors. Most of our 500+ members train for fitness, self-defense, stress relief, and the love of the sport. But we also have active competition teams in BJJ and MMA for those who want to test themselves in tournaments. Competition is 100% optional — you'll never be pressured into it.
Directly and respectfully. Our coaches are the authority on the mats, and they address issues immediately. We foster a culture of mutual respect — training partners look out for each other. If a parent or student has a concern, our door is always open. We'd rather hear about a small issue early than let it become a big one.
We currently integrate all students into our regular classes, and our female members consistently tell us they feel welcome and respected here. Our coaches ensure safe pairings and appropriate intensity for everyone. That said, we're always listening — if demand grows for dedicated women's classes, we're ready to build them.
Absolutely. Let your coach know before class about any injuries, conditions, or learning differences, and they'll adapt accordingly. Martial arts is inherently individual — every technique can be modified, every drill can be scaled. We've worked with students across a wide range of abilities, and our coaches take pride in meeting people where they are.
Tournaments, Ranking & Long-Term Path
In BJJ, we follow the standard belt system (white → blue → purple → brown → black) with stripes marking progress between belts. Promotions are based on technique, consistency, and mat time — not just showing up for a test. Your coach will let you know when you're ready. Striking disciplines use their own progression systems tied to skill milestones.
We have active competition teams in BJJ and MMA, and our coaches will help you prepare with specialized drilling, extra mat time, and competition strategy. But competition is 100% optional. Most of our members train for fitness, self-defense, and the love of the sport — and that's just as valued here as a gold medal.
The journey never ends — that's the beauty of martial arts. In the first year, you'll build a strong technical foundation and fall in love with training. By year two or three, you'll be a trusted training partner, helping newer students the way someone once helped you. Long-term members often cross-train across multiple disciplines, pursue competition, and become part of the leadership fabric of the academy. Families who start together often train together for years. This isn't a seasonal activity — it's a lifestyle.
